Perhaps the first woman to sing with all the power and swagger of a man with a bluesey, gritty, booze-soaked voice, Janis Joplin was an inspiration to countless women to pick up a microphone and grow a pair! The lead singer for Big Brother and the Holding Company, Janis rose to fame with such songs as "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Piece of My Heart," belting them out with unrestrained power. Sadly, Janis died of an overdose in 1970 before she was able to see her tremendous impact really hit the music world.
