Jamaican is an ethnic group. Anyone calling themselves Jamaican is typically from Jamaica or has family from Jamaica. Jamaica is a Caribbean island in the Greater Antilles south of Cuba and west of Hispaniola. Arawakan- Speaking individuals were the first to inhabit the island nation. They named it Xaymaca, but the Spanish named it Santiago. Once the island became under British rule the name was changed to Jamaica. Jamaican characteristics are often darker skin, due to the amount of sun the native individuals see, dark hair, dark eyes, and interesting accents. Jamaica is an important island for Reggae.

Dressing up as Jamaican

Jamaican costumes use all of the style true Jamaicans have. Much of the typical dress is hand woven materials in bright colors. For your Jamaican costume a Rasta Tam with dreadlocks is needed. Long hair or short hair with dreadlocks is appropriate for the costume. The tam will be multi colored in yellows, reds, greens and darker colors. Shirts that are just as multi colored will be needed. Generally you will want the shirt to be open most of the way down your chest, with long or short sleeves. Pants can be knit or jeans, or you can wear board shorts. Do not forget the dark sunglasses to complete the look.
