About Jail

Jail is just another word for prison or correctional institution. All three of these places are for the lawful custody of detained personnel. Jail is often going to hold persons who are accused of a crime and waiting for their trial. Not all prisons can be considered jails. In fact most prisons are for larger communities. Most individuals refer to a jail when they speak about the holding cells in a police station. Other connotations of jail come from the Wild West with the one room jail house made of wood or brick with iron bars for windows. Jails are operated by the city or county governments. Most often jails hold individuals who are serving less than a year’s time rather than several years.
