About the Irish
Anyone who hails from the Emerald Isles or who claims ancestry from Ireland is known as Irish. One of the islands that make up the United Kingdom, Ireland has been inhabited for at least 9,000 years. In ancient times, the Irish were refered to as the Celts or Celtic people and the language spoken was Gaelic. Although the Irish speak English (with slight variations depending on the region), Gaelic is still occassional spoken and studied. There are also two "types" of Irish people: the pale, red-headed (or "ginger" in "English") freckled Irish and the darker-haired "Dark Irish" who claim some Spanish ancestry alongside their Celtic side. Some famous Irishmen include writer James Joyce, St. Brigid (one of the country's patron saints), Oscar Wilde, and actor Colin Farrell.
Dressing up Irish
Get you're "Erin Go Braugh" on and show off your Irish pride on St. Patty's Day or any day! Ladies can dress as an Irish Lass in a short, sexy style in vibrant green or a slightly more sedate Irish Renaissance gown. Accessorize with a red wig with flowing curls and shamrock tights for a festive theme!
Guys can paint the town green with a Green Derby or a Shamrock Derby in the festive green-and-white colors of the day. For a more formal approach, try on the St Patrick Tie -- or just kick back with a good pint of Guinness or some green beer while sporting an Irish shirt or a Irish ballcap in bright green. Even if you're not Irish by blood, you can count yourself as such on March 17th!
