About Independence Day

The Fourth of July, or Independence Day, commemorates the day in 1776 when the 13 colonies declared themselves a separate nation from soverign England. Stemming from "taxation without representation" and a myriad of other reasons, an enclave of statesmen and prominent citizens who became the United States of America's "founding fathers" rallied support to splinter off from England. Each individual state banded together forming a conglomerate of 13 states attempting to become a single nation. It was on July 4, 1976 that the Declaration of Independence (penned by Thomas Jefferson) was adopted by the Continental Congress.
