About Hunchback of Notre Dame

Written in 1831 by French author Victor Hugo, the Hunchback of Notre Dame told the tale of a partially blind, deaf hunchback named Quasimodo who was found by a priest and rang the bells in the famous Notre Dame Cathedral. Taking place during the Renaissance in 1492, the story is a tragedy of the human condition and social misperceptions. Due to his extreme strength despite his physical deformities and his poor hearing, Quasimodo was a natural to ring the bells. The tragedy of his tale comes when he falls in love with the gypsy Esmerelda who is persecuted for witchcraft.

The book was later made into film and Quasimodo was most famously portrayed by actor Lon Chaney who wore prosthetic makeup and a large, uncomfortable weighted hump on his back to pull off the role. A much cheerier version of Hugo's tale was made into an animated Disney feature.
