About Hippies

Hippies were part of a counter-cultural movement in the 1960s. An offshoot of the Beatniks of the '50s, the hippie movement got its start in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district and spread forward from there. While they were very motivated towards bringing about political change, ending and protesting involvement in Vietnam, they also dabbled heavily in marijuana and LSD. "Far out, man!"

The culminating moment of the Hippie revolution came in 1969 in Woodstock, NY with a musical festival featuring such prominent artists performing on the bill as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.

Dressing up as a Hippie

Get groovy with a hippie costume. Tune in, turn on, and drop out with a long brown hippie wig complete with a beaded headband. Pair it with a tie dye hippie costume with bellbottoms and some Birkenstocks!

Ladies can opt for a sexier version of the hippie look, complete with a midriff-baring top that positively screams "Free Love!"

And even pets can get in on the act with an adorable pet hippie costume!
