About Hip Hop

Hip Hop describes both a music and culture which takes root among African Americans in urban areas that began in the 1970s. Hip Hop is still thriving, very popular among not only blacks, but whites and Hispanics, as well. The music stemmed from beat-heavy, drum-centric songs featuring a vocal style known as "rap," reciting lyrics with a certain rhythm and flow to accompany and compliment the beats. Hip hop also encompassed dancing to rap and hip hop music, including the acrobatic breakdancing and pop and lock. These styles are associated with "old school" hip hop dance, while new school styles include krump, moving all of the limbs of the body in an energetic manner that combines spontaneous movement along with choreographed steps.

Dressing up Hip Hop

Dress in true hip hop style in costumes inspired by some of the forefathers of the music and dance movement of the genre. {80s blinds shades} with slats are a choice to get the street look favored by early rappers like Grandmaster Flash, while the Pimp of Love costume is great for dressing up as Flavor Flav who started out with Public Enemy before branching out into his own reality series. The set includes a fur-lined viking helmet and giant clock to wear around your neck, a la Flav, plus a faux "grill" for your mouth. Or, try on the Old School Rapper costume to get the look of an unofficial member of Run DMC with a faux kangol hat and chain for around your neck. If you want to go more new school, you can't go wrong with the Eminem mask.
