About Heidi

Heidi is a children’s story created by Johanna Spyri. The Swiss author first published the book in 1880 based on a tale in the Swiss Alps. Heidi was an orphaned girl who went to live with her grandfather in the mountains. Unfortunately he was a rough man who didn’t have time to raise a child or so he thought. At one point in the novel Heidi is sent to live with a couple and their child. She was to gain education while being a companion for the little girl. The little girl was sickly and confined to a wheel chair, until the very end of the book. It is a tale of triumph for both girls and of friendship. At the end her grandfather realizes just how much he needed Heidi in his life. Heidi has been translated into several languages as well as made into a couple of movies. The first movie starred Shirley Temple as Heidi.

Dressing up as Heidi

Heidi is a character based on the Swiss Alps and written in German; therefore the costume is going to be based on Dirndls. A Dirndl is a German skirt and blouse combination. Normally the skirt is mid thigh in length with knee high socks and clogs. You can find children’s to adult sizes below. Men’s lederhosen are another choice in costume from the Heidi tale.
