In Washington Irving's story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," the town's uptight schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane is plagued by the ghost of a colonial Hessian soldier who kinda lost his head. Literally. The Headless Horseman galloped around Sleepy Hollow on horseback, a vengeful apparition who figured that if he couldn't have his head, no one else could, either!
