About Harlequins

With their origins dating back to the late 1800s in the Italian theatre tradition, commedia dell'arte, Harlequins were a popular type of clown. Usually seen with a white face and a mask covering the eye-portion of the face, the (Harlequin} was almost always dressed in a costume with one side one color and the other a contrasting shade, or (most typically) covered in a repeating diamond pattern. Many times these comic characters also sported jester hats with bells at the ends of their caps.

One famous female harlequin happens to be the Joker's main squeeze, Harley Quinn. Other harlequins are featured prominently in Mardi Gras parades or in ballet and theatrical performances.
