About "Hairspray"

Originally a 1988 cult film by King of Camp, John Waters, "Hairspray" was later made into a Broadway musical and more recently remade as a feature film/musical. A musical comedy set in the Waters' hometown of Baltimore in the early '60s and heavily featuring themes of anti-racism and desegregation of the period, "Hairspray" focuses on chubby hair-hopper Tracy Turnblad who wants to make the cut for a local dance program, The Corny Collins Show (a takeoff on "American Bandstand"-like teen dance shows).

Dressing as Hairspray

You may have to bring your own killer dance moves to the floor, but you can still dress the part of one of "the nicest kids in town" with a number of officially licensed "Hairspray" costumes. Available in ladies' plus sizes are Tracy Turnblad and Motormouth Maybelle costumes. Top off the look with wigs with Tracy's signature frosted "flip" and Motormouth Maybelle's elegant blonde locks. Plus-size ladies -- and some men -- can make both Divine and John Travolta proud as they shimmy it up as Tracy's big momma, Edna Turnblad. Traditionally played by a man in drag, an Edna costume is sure to score you big laughs. Rounding out the "Hairspray" pack with some cute costumes and wigs are Tracy's best gal pal, sweet little Penny Pingleton and Tracy's love interest and teen heartthrob Link Larkin.
