The slang term from the American Old West, a gunslinger was either an outlaw or lawman who exhibited prowess with a gun and was rarely seen without one in a holster belt at his hip. It's widely believed that the terms "gunslinger" and "gunfighter" are modern terms, and in the 1800s and early 1900s, these men were often referred to as "gunmen," "pistoleers," and "shootists" ("The Shootist" actually being a title of a film starring famed movie cowboy and man's man, John Wayne). In the days of the rough and rugged Old West, a gun fight could break out at any point, and many a man carried his piece with him. Everyone from the local sherrif to simple cowboys and ranchers often carried a gun.

Dressing up as a Gunslinger

Saunter up to the bar and put one hand on your gun belt dressed as your favorite historical gunslinger from the American Old West. Similar to the type of attire favored by Tombstone lawman, Wyatt Earp, one style of gunslinger costume comes complete with a dark brown duster jacket and tan vest in a faux suede-like material. Also included is a black ribbon tie to wear with a white button down shirt and a holster. Another style of costume features a long, black duster and a black double-breasted pinstripe vest. Rounding out the ensemble is a white dickey with a silver-grey satin ascot attached.

Accessorize any of these costumes with a cowboy hat in your color of choice and a pair of cowboy boots and spurs. For a villainous look, try on the gunslinger mustache in a black, curled style. Don't forget your most important accessory, a toy gun or Western-style pistol to tuck into your holster.
