About Groom

Groom has two connotations associated with it. First a groom is a person who is employed to take care of horses and sometimes the care of the stables. The term groom was started in 1225 meaning a male child or youth who worked for their employer in a variety of ways. There was the Groom of the Chamber or bathroom, Groom of the Robes, Stole, and Stool. The groom for horses came about in 1667. The second way to look at the word groom is as a bridegroom. In 1604 the word groom became associated with a person who is about to be married. The clothing the groom wears will depend on the time of day, ceremony, and style. There have been many different styles of groom clothing, which now make great costumes.

Dressing up as Groom

The most popular way to think of a groom for costumes is as a bridegroom; therefore, you have plenty of options depending on the period you wish to take your costume from. You have the Hillbilly groom in which you need jean coveralls, a white tee shirt, and hillbilly top hat with work boots to finish it off. The next option is the Corpse Bride groom where a 19th century style suit is needed. In this case long tails on the suit jacket, a white shirt, vest, dress pants, top hat, and dress shoes are needed. When creating the perfect groom costume, don’t forget your bride! Another option for grooms is the Scottish groom. This groom needs a kilt, white shirt, sash, and a Scottish brogue.
