About Gothic

Gothic used to apply to two different things: gothic literature and gothic architecture. The Gothic period for literature was the late 18th and early 19th century. Gothic architecture was started in the 12th century lasting until the 16th century. However, there was a revival of the architecture in later centuries even transfering to the US during the 19th century. However, today when we think of Gothic we are not thinking about either of these two options. Instead we are more inclined to think of the Goth Subculture which is found around the world. Goth is a post punk genre which began with Gothic rock in the 1980’s. The culture is based on music, aesthetics, and fashion, though there are different styles. Styles for Gothic include deathrock, punk, androgynous, Victorian, Renaissance, and Medieval attire.

Dressing up as Gothic

As mentioned above there are a variety of styles associated with gothic. One of the popular costumes for Gothic is a vampire or vampires. In this case the costume is completely black with either a dress or shirt and pants. For women a veil is often worn covering the face, with black lipstick, nail polish, and sometimes a dog collar. These costumes can include black gloves which go to the mid arm, knee high black high heels or combat boots, as well as fake vampire teeth. Some individuals have gone so far as to make the teeth permanent when it is not their costume, but their style of dress. Blood red outfits like the gothic rose are also common. The gothic rose is a red dress with hat and veil. Often ear piercings, lip piercings, and other piercing go along with the costumes.
