Guiding travelers and city-dwellers alike through the canal-laden streets of Venice, the gondolier is a link to the Italian city's ancient past and it's present. In order to be a gondolier, one must have been born in Venice. Also according to Venetian custom, whenever a gondolier ferries his passengers who are couples under a bridge, they must kiss to preserve the spirit of eternal love. Now that's amore!

Dressing as a Gondolier

The look of a classical Venetian gondolier can be acheived with a costume complete with a striped black-and-white shirt, black pants, a wide-brimmed black hat, and perhaps a red neck kerchief to add a splash of color! For an optional look, straw gondolier hats are available with a strip of red, ribbon fabric for a color coordinated look. For a fun prop, grab a boat oar or an extra large stick to guide your gondola to the next party!
