About German
While we may think of German as being derived from the country Germany it is actually more complicated than that. The ancestry of the German ethnic group actually began in Scandinavia. It was not until the migration period that the Germans began to move further into Europe. In fact the Germanic people began post medieval times. During the sixteenth century the German people were known as Almain or Dutch. The Roman Empire had a great deal of influence on the Germanic people. Austria and other Scandinavian countries were known as the land for the Germanians by the Roman Empire. The German people have had a varied history and today we mostly think about the costumes of Hansel and Gretel as well as the German police.
Dressing up as German
If you are interested in the German culture and wish to make your next costume fit within that culture you have several choices. You can choose to be a renaissance lady in a white or green German gown or Gretel. For the men you have Hansel and the German office costumes. You can also dress up as a sexy alpine girl with the typical barmaid outfit. Lederhosen and Dirndls are also popular costumes for dressing as German. If you need more ideas check out Oktoberfest for other period costumes and typical outfits for the holiday. There are costumes for children and adults with a German design. Most of the costumes are going to be embroidered with typical German prints and symbols. You can add shoes, tiaras, or other accessories to the costume of your choice to make it more whimsical or perfect. If you have a budget don’t worry there will be something in the German costume to fit your needs.
