About Genie

The word genie comes to us from Islam or Pre Islamic Arabian Folklore. A genie or jinn is a creature with supernatural capabilities. The one thing the genie lacks is his own free will. He can give others what they wish, but he cannot gain his own freedom without being set free. Genies were thought to be good or evil. Genies were mentioned in the Qur’an. The most notable genie in history is Iblis who refused to bow down to Adam when he was ordered by Allah. We mentioned that genies do not have free will of their own, but this is a different type of genie from the one mentioned in the Qur’an. Genies as we typically know them are from Hollywood movies or books like Aladdin. The Genie in Aladdin was unable to free himself, having to give people three wishes when they found his lamp and rubbed on it. I Dream of Jennie is another depiction. This Genie was female. An astronaut found her lamp and brought her home. She would always make wishes even if it was not exactly what the master had in mind. She had more free will than the typical Disney Genie.

Dressing up as Genie

There are several ways to dress up as a genie. You have both female and male costume choices that range in adult and children sizes. The most typical costume is the Arab one. The costume has some loose flowing pants usually of a sheer fabric. The waist is formfitting and the ankles are tight. The top for the woman would be a mid drift style vest or sleeveless shirt. It could even be a bustier that is of gossamer fabric. For the male genie no shirt or an open vest is often used. The feet need elf shoes in other words shoes with a rolled up end. To accompany the costume a genie lamp is needed.
