About Geishas

In Japanese culture, geisha were highly trained singers, dancers, and artists who performed for society's elite. Traditionally, geisha were instructed in many elaborate dances and rituals, even the smallest of their gestures was intended to convey a sense of elegance from the careful application of their makeup and hairstyles to even pouring tea. Beautiful and intelligent, geisha were the height of classical Japanese femininity. Geisha's in modern culture, especially in the United States have experienced a surge in interest thanks to the novel and film, "Memoirs of a Geisha."

Dressing up as a Geisha

From the top of her head to the bottom of her sandals, a geisha was always impecably dressed and groomed. Begin with a black geisha wig done in either a long, half-up style or a full, voluminous bun. Some geisha wigs come already decorated or you can add your own clips, combs, or kanzashi flowers to adorn your beautiful hairstyle. Paint your face with chalk white cream makeup and striking crimson lips. Use liquid black eyeliner to extend the corners of your eyes and give them an upturned, striking effect, making your geisha costume all the more convincing.

The traditional costume of a geisha would not be complete without a bright, embroidered kimono with long sleeves. In a variety of colors, each brilliantly hued geisha gown is trimmed in regal gold with individualized adornments like embroidered dragons, flowers, leaves, or other traditional Japanese images. Keep the sun off of your porcelain complexion with a geisha parasol.
