About the French

France has had a long history with those claiming ancestry from this European country proudly calling themselves French. Early people who lived in the region known as France centuries -- possibly millennia ago were known as the Gauls (at the time of the Roman Empire and later, the Franks. Centuries later, the French thrived in their own right with a rich culture of art and literature all their own. During the early 1700s, the nation was ruled by Louis XIV, the Sun King who favored the arts and good times. During the time of the French Revolution when the impoverished French people were starving, many nobles were beheaded including Queen Marie Antoinette. Throughout the 1800s and early 1900s, French art and good times were restored along with the Moulin Rouge and Can Can dancers. Today, France is still a bastion of culture with tourists flocking to see the Louvre museum, the Eiffel Tower, and other attractions.

Dressing up French

Put on your best beret and brush up on your French (or at least try to sound like Maurice Chevalier... Ho-honh!)! Dress as some notable figures in French history with costumes based on the extravagant queen, Marie Antoinette with a powdered wig and pastel period gown... Gentlemen may want to dress as Napoleon Bonaparte (who was actually from Corsica, although he became Emperor of France) or one of the Three Musketeers from author Alexandre Dumas' classic work of literature about the expert swordsmen during the time of Cardinal Richelieu.
