Fire fighting has been around since Ancient Egypt when hand operated pumps were used to extinguish fires. From the first times of fire to now many things have changed. The firefighters we see today originated in the time of Ben Franklin. This was when the first fire fighting squad was formed with a fire engine to help race to fires. Ben Franklin started the Union Fire Company in Philadelphia, and even George Washington was a part of the Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Company. Today the outfits have progressed to fire retardant suits, oxygen tanks, helmets, and masks. The fire trucks have also progressed. A firefighters job is not just to stop fire from burning, but also, to be on the scene at car accidents or any other emergency call.

Dressing up as a Firefighter

A firefighter will need to have the fire retardant suit. This is normally a yellow suit with suspenders on the pants and a jacket to cover the upper body. It is a thick suit, often warm. Underneath the suit is usually a hood to protect the face. Most often a firefighter will wear a tee shirt and paramedic pants when not at a fire. Their boots are inside the pants to make it easier to get them on and keep their feet protected. So you will need the full outfit complete with helmet. You don’t have to have the oxygen tank to dress as a fireman. Carrying a hose or axe can also be a sign of a firefighter. To other costume suggestions would be Ben Franklin and George Washington as original firefighters. Paramedics are another choice.
