Translated from the French to English, "Mardi Gras" means "Fat Tuesday." The last day of the celebration of Carnival, Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, kicking off the season of Lent leading up to Easter. The day is celebrated by all manner of indulging in foods or fun festivities that would normally be abstained from during the somber Lenten season.
