About Fantasia

The word fantasia can apply to many things. In the Never Ending Story it was a world. For some it is music. In this case Fantasia refers to a Walt Disney animated film created in 1940. There was also a sequel called Fantasia 2000 released in 1999. Fantasia is a film with classical music as its base line. There is no dialogue only Disney animated actors and the music to tell the story. The music was played by the Philadelphia Orchestra and led by Leopold Stokowski. At some points in the film there are actual live action shots of the orchestra and its leader. The film follows this line: Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, Nutcracker Suite, the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, The Rite of Spring, Intermission is thrown in, then Pastoral Symphony, Dane of the Hours, Night on Bald Mountain or Ave Maria, and then the credits roll. In much of the film characters Disney created are used such as Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer.

Dressing up as Fantasia

The costume everyone thinks about when talking about the movie is Mickey Mouse when he is the sorcerer. To have this costume you would need a Mickey Mouse costume with the black mouse body, white gloves, and full helmet for the face. You could go with the Mickey Mouse ears if you don’t want the full face. Instead of the red shorts Mickey has for the scene you would need a red robe with yellow clogs for shoes. The robe should be to the floor, with long bell sleeves. To add to the costume a wizard hat in blue with stars would be needed. Lastly to finish the Mickey costume a long wand is needed. You may also carry a stool with you as there are scenes with Mickey on a stool to be in position for the conducting of the music. Don’t forget to have Minnie Mouse beside you.
