About Eye Patches
An eye patch is a protective covering that straps around the head and features a "patch" that rests over the eye socket. While the strap may be made of elastic or a thin corded or ribbon-like fabric that can be tied, the patch itself can be made of thick cotton, leather, or even plastic. Eye patches are worn to keep light out of an eye that has just been surgically repaired, or as a cosmetic fix to avoid unwanted attention to an eye that is no longer in the socket or which has been destroyed or disfigured.
Pirates were commonly seen wearing eyepatches, often losing an eye in a duel or to disease. In more recent times, actor/singer/dancer and full-time member of the Rat Pack, Sammy Davis, Jr. wore an eye patch in a variety of colors and fabrics to coordinate with his suits after he had lost it in a car accident. A female character who sports an eye patch is Elle Driver from the film Kill Bill.
Dressing up with an Eye Patch
Your pirate costume isn't complete without an eye patch. You can opt for the basic black look favored by pirates for centuries. Then again, black goes with everything! If you want your pirate costume to be a bit more distinctive, several styles of eyepatches are available. A flamboyantly elegant pirate look can be acheived with a rhinestone eye patch decorated with sparkling white rhinestones. Gold-trimmed pirate eye patches are also available, featuring an opaque mesh screen that allows the wearer to see out, but no one else to see in. Another favorite is the pirate eye patch featuring a skull and crossbones in white or silver already emblazoned on the patch! Ahoy!
