About Disco

Whether you found yourself doing The Hustle at Studio 54 or sporting a "Disco Sucks" ringer t-shirt, the dance craze of the 1970s made a huge impact on the entire decade. A reaction to the socially conscious folk music movement of the '60s hippies, disco ushered in the beginnings of "The Me Decade" with a carefree mix of fashion and fun. Led by such groups as The Bee Gees, The Ohio Players, The Village People, and others, disco featured piano, electric bass and guitar, in addition to sometimes synthesized strings and/or horns to create highly danceable party anthems.

Dressing Disco

Bring a bit of Studio 54 to your own pad with a white suit a la John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever paired up with a black shirt and gold chains on your chest. For maximum comedic effect, create a convincing "nest" for those gold chains with a poufy "chest wig" to simulate some oh-so-masculine chest hair. Slick back your hair with some gel or sport a slicked wig or even a disco afro while you're doing The Hustle. If that's not your cup of tea, make a break for the YMCA and costume yourself as the Village People by dressing as a disco cowboy, police officer, biker, Indian, or construction worker. Accessories are the key for creating a solid disco atmosphere. Stock up on some strobe lights and mirror balls to decorate your own "discotech."
