About Dickens

Dickens or Charles Dickens is a 19th century fiction writer. Dickens was born in 1812 and died in 1870. He is considered a Victorian novelist and perhaps the most popular of his time. The most popular book Dickens ever wrote was “A Christmas Carol.” The characters from this book have been recreated in theatre, movies, and cartoons. The most interesting interpretation has been the Muppets Christmas Carol. Dickens lived in Landport, Hampshire, England. Other works by the novelist are Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield, Bleak House, and Little Dorrit. Dickens works are still taught in schools today because of the brilliance behind them.

Dressing up as Dickens

For Dickens you can choose one of his many characters like Scrooge or David Copperfield to dress as. These individuals mirror Dickens in clothing style since he wrote about the period in which he lived. The appropriate Dickens costume will have a dandy appearance about them with a brown mock vest, period style buttons, hunter green tail coat, and ascot. To complete the look a black cane, black shoes, and a top hat are needed. Dickens and his characters often wore waist length capes or longer. To make the costume historical you would need all these pieces. When you create a Dickens costume do not forget to have a Caroller or three along with you!
