About Cowboy

The word cowboy first appeared in our language in the 1700’s. A cowboy is someone who herds cattle and other livestock. The word cowboy is strictly North American although the job exists in other parts of the country. Most usually they are called cattle handlers in placed like South America and Australia. The tradition of the cowboy was first started in medieval Spain during the 16th century and was brought to America with the Spanish settlers. The life of a cowboy was often a lonely one with only men for company as they would go on their rides to move cattle through the land. There has always been a certain lingo and tradition for the cowboy that has changed little over time.

Dressing up as Cowboy

There have been many famous cowboys and riders. If you wish to have a costume this year as a cowboy you have plenty of costumes to choose from. The normal cowboy is going to have tight blue jeans, chaps, a button down shirt with collar, cowboy boots with spurs, the cowboy hat, and of course a rope. For little children you may want to add a fake horse and fake gun to make the entire costume realistic. The hats can change from being tall hats to the sombrero style. The chaps are normally made from leather, but for a cheaper costume you can choose brown cotton. Some cowboys will even have a handkerchief tied around their necks to keep the dust from their face when riding. To really complete the costume a duster, which is a long leather coat can add to the whole mysterious cowboy lawman look.
