In United States history, the colonial period referred to the country's fledgling state, finding its legs and eventual independence from Great Britain. Originally a collection of colonies, the United States were an overseas territory that owed taxes to Britain in spite of the fact that many new Americans left the country to find religious or political freedom from its sovereign nation. The trying times of the colonial period brought forth a number of heroes who changed the course of history with their bravery, eloquence, and perseverance.
