About Colonial Shoes
Colonial refers to a time period in history between the 1700’s and 1800’s. Colonial times were basically when more and more individuals were coming over from Europe to settle in the Americas for the opportunities being offered. At the time of the Revolutionary war there were 13 colonies which were fighting for independence from Europe, specifically Britain. It is this period which gives us the words “colonial shoes.” Any shoe which was made from the 1700’s to the 1800’s in America are considered colonial. Women’s colonial shoes were made from linen or silk. In some instances shoes were made from leather with leather heels. The men’s shoes were made from leather. A man’s shoe was wider, but it still had a thick heel for support. Most men’s shoes also had buckles. The buckles were made from gold on most shoes, but some silver ones did exist later on.
Dressing up as Colonial Shoes
Colonial shoes allow you to dress in many different costumes relating to the time period around the Revolutionary War. John Adams with his colonial dress jacket, white pants, and judges wig is just one option you have when it comes to the colonial shoes completing a costume. George Washington in his red coat, white pants, and white wig is another option. For women the costumes may not be as famous as Adams or Washington, but any type of colonial dress needs colonial shoes. If you are a pioneer you would need the leather shoes or boot style shoes that existed. As you create the Colonial outfit do not forget the colonial hat with matching buckle.
