In formalwear, jackets or suit coats often feature long, trailing fabric that is usually split up the middle and tapering to a point in the center, ending at no longer than the back of the knee. Given their "tail"-like appearance, these are commonly referred to as coat tails. Tuxedo jackets with a short front that hits at the waist yet still has the tails in the back is referred to as a "cutaway jacket" with tails. These styles are often favored by conductors of symphony orchestras for a classy look that allows them greater freedom of movement.
