About Cloak
A cloak is a garment. They were quite popular in the earlier periods even during the Middle Ages. They were designed to be like an overcoat to protect from the cold, rain, or snow. In fact cloaks are considered to be as old as human history due to the need of an outer garment during harsh weather. The first cloaks were made from animal skin in which the wearer would tie it around their neck and wrap it tight around their bodies. As civilization grew cloaks became fashionable accessories made of silk, but mostly from heavier materials. The styles of cloaks changed from short mid calf lengths to ankle lengths and other varieties. Most of the cloaks worn did have hoods, but some would just have a high collar much like a trench coat. As history began to fashion other objects for sewing cloaks also gained buttons on the front to help them stay closed. Cloaks are usually sleeveless, allowing the wearer to shove the material off their shoulders when unneeded.
Dressing up as Cloak
Cloaks can also be considered capes or robes. A cloak can be made of any color from gray, black to green or white. There is even a velveteen cloak made of heavier material for the costume wearer. Cloaks are accessories to a number of costumes like Dracula, the Middle Ages, Medieval or Knights. As mentioned above a cloak is going to be sleeveless, most often to the ankles, with a hood attached. Costume cloaks are made from inexpensive materials like cotton, tweed, or even knit polyester materials. Lord of the Rings is another place to get costumes in which a cloak would be needed, for example Legolas the elf would be a great costume. In this costume idea you would need black calf length boots, knit tight fitting pants, a tunic, and a bow and arrow with elf ears.
