About Cinco De Mayo

Cinco De Mayo, or "The 5th of May" is a Mexican holiday which celebrates Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin's defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day. (That day is actually celebrated on September 16th.) What was remarkable about Cinco de Mayo is that the outnumbered Mexican forces defeated the much better armed French. It has become a celebration of Mexican heritage not just in their homeland, but wherever there are large sections of Mexicans in a country's population. In Mexico and in many Mexican communities in the United States, the day is celebrated with cultural activities such as roving mariachi bands and folk dancing. In many non-Mexican communities, the holiday is celebrated with lots of Mexican food, beer, and margaritas.

Dressing up as Cinco De Mayo

Feel festive for Cinco de Mayo with a variety of costumes with a Mexican theme. Put on a sombrero and serape in a bold pattern for a Mexican man or dress as a spicy senorita with a folk dancer-style dress and fan. You could be that long ago General of the Mexican Army. Other costume ideas such as the masked Zorro and Lady Zorro can make for great couples' costumes as you both find yourselves so cunning and free, whilst making the sign of the "Z" with a rapier sword!
