Chess is first thought to have come from India during the Gupta Empire, the 6th Century. It was known as Caturariga which means four divisions. The game at the time had the infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots. This evolved into the game we know recognize with pawns, knights, bishops, rooks, Kings and Queens. It was in the 1200’s the modern game rules we play today were set. Before the game had a vizier, but the queen replaced this piece, which also meant the moves for that piece had to be adapted. By the 15th century the Chess rules were set, with the queen becoming much more powerful than she had originally been. Upper and middle classes in the 1700’s and 1800’s would play Chess for fun, while before it had been a helpful pastime to learn strategies for war. References to chess in today’s films often use chess rules and moves against opponents to win. Code Geass is known for using chess references when Lelouch is up against his opponents. So while the game was first created in India it is now a World Wide activity that is very prominent.

Dressing up as Chess

A chess costume can really be any of the pieces on the board. You can have a knight costume which requires you to sit atop a fake horse in fake armor. There is the rook, pawn, and castle to dress as. The most popular chess costumes are the King and Queen. For the Chess King you will have a polyester robe made mostly of black material, with a checker black and white front. A headpiece and mask are included with the costume. So let your armies protect you from the opposing Chess Queen! The Chess Queen outfit is very similar to the King. The mask and hat will be slightly different, but the checker pattern and black material is the same. You may decide you need a whole chess board for your family costume party, so do not forget the Bishop.
