About Cher

Born as Cherilyn Sarkisian on May 20, 1946, Cher has been known by a single name as distinctive as her powerful, yet feminine voice. The striking singer got her start as a backup singer for girl groups The Ronettes and The Crystals. Her best friend, and later first husband, Sonny Bono pushed her to the forefront and teamed up with her for the '60s folk duo, Cleo and Caesar. They later dropped that moniker and became Sonny and Cher, hitting it big with the song "I Got You, Babe." The couple later got their own television variety show that remained a hit until they divorced. Cher set off to a very successful solo career. Although it started off rocky, Cher made a comeback in the '80s with the songs "If I Could Turn Back Time," "Just Like Jesse James," and "Heart of Stone," among others. She also turned to acting, winning a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in "Moonstruck." Still performing today, Cher is a staple of the Las Vegas concert scene, making a deal with Caesars Palace for millions for a multi-year performing contract.

Although she hasn't re-invented herself quite as much as Madonna, Cher has undergone several transformations since she first burst onto the scene in the 1960s.
