Celtic

Celtic is a word used to refer to the Celts. The Celts were early peoples who spread from Europe through England and on to Ireland. Though the Celts are no longer dominant as a culture, they do live on in Ireland. Celts began expanding their horizons in 1200 BC to 400 AD. They lived mostly during the Iron Age. Celtic language is thought to be based on Lepontic inscriptions. By the time of the Roman Empire the Celts did have a lot of land, but they slowly lost it to the Romans. Eventually the only area left for them was on the British Isles and Ireland. In Europe if it wasn’t the Roman’s attacking the culture it was the Germanic Peoples. The Gauls were consider Celts or of Celtic Origin.

Dressing up as Celtic

Predominately we think of Celtic as Irish. Many of the symbols and crosses we see from Ireland are based on Celtic designs. Celtic people were considered pagan and had ‘magical’ beliefs. Celtic Costumes can reflect wizards, witches, or be more true to history. One option is the Celtic King. The King costume will have hose and tunic, with decidedly Celtic symbols, a cape, and sword. The costume also comes with a crown. For females a choice can be the Renaissance Celtic dress. The dress fits within the 1400s with blue skirt layered over with red, and a tight bodice. The dress will also have Celtic symbols and embroidered designs. Check out Saint Patricks or Blarney Stone for other ideas and accessories.
