Carnivals, surprisingly, were first religious celebrations. The first carnivals were Christian festivities celebrating Lent. Most carnivals usually included a parade and other acts that you would see at a circus. It is almost hard to believe that clowns riding around in a little car and The Bearded Lady are derived from a celebration for Jesus!
