A candy striper is a hospital volunteer. These individuals work in a hospital without pay helping out in a number of health care ways. Typically a nurse is going to oversee the candy striper to ensure they are doing their job properly. Most candy stripers are there to empty bed pans, sit with the patient, and learn medical practices. A candy striper is someone who normally wants to enter the medical profession in some way and has decided to get some training early. High school or college students are most often candy stripers, but some older individuals may also take up the job. The name candy striper came from the uniform they would have to wear while on the job. This uniform is what makes an excellent costume. It mostly resembles a stick of candy based on the design. The duties of a candy striper can vary depending on what the hospital needs or where their interests lie. Candy stripers were generally female when the outfit below was worn.

Dressing up as Candy Striper

The outfit of a candy striper which has now been turned into a costume is a red and white jumper. The jumper would reach about mid thigh or to the knees. The red and white stripes were always vertical on the outfit, and it would generally have two pockets in the front. A 1950’s Nurse outfit closely resembles the candy striper outfit except that the nurse would be in white. There was also a candy striper hat like the nurse’s cap. The costumes can be made to look sexier with fishnet stockings and high heels. A stethoscope might also be in order.
