About Buddy Holly
A rock n' roll pioneer of the 1950s, Buddy Holly was the shaky voice behind such hits as "Peggy Sue," "Every Day," and "That'll Be the Day." His backing band, The Crickets had a distinctive guitar sound that bordered on rockabilly but still managed to chart into more pop territory. Easily recognizable by his signature black horn rimmed glasses, Buddy Holly died tragically in a 1959 airplane crash which also claimed the lives of fellow stars, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper -- an event chronicled in Don McLean's epic song, "American Pie" as "the day the music died." A movie of his life made in 1978 starred actor Gary Busey as the singer and in 1986, Buddy Holly was inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. He also inspired alternative "geek rock" band Weezer to pen a song named after him that launched their career.
