About Bowler Hats

The bowler hat, or derby first hit the fashion scene in 1850, crafted for the Duke of Leicester. With its rounded shape, short brim and felt fabric, it was a hybrid between the upper class top hats of the British upper class and the shorter, flat, pork pie hats of the working class.

Dressing up with a Bowler Hat

The bowler hat offers a great finishing touch to several costumes. Wear it with a little tuxedo, small mustache and a cane to emulate the silent film-era great, Charlie Chaplin or bail yourself out of "a fine mess" as part of your costume for the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy. For a more sinister take, dress as Malcolm MacDowell's infamous character, Alex from A Clockwork Orange with a black derby with a pair of long johns, suspenders, a cane, and false eyelashes over a single eye.
