A slang surf or boarding term for a female, "Betty" is also a shortened version of the popular name "Elizabeth." A number of famous women have been named "Betty" such as Bettie Page, the '50s fetish pin up model with long black hair and distinctive bangs that hit mid-forehead that came to be known as "Bettie Bangs" and have been copied by countless goth girls in homage to the legendary beauty. Another famous Betty is the blonde, girl-next-door girlfriend to Archie in the comics of the same name who wore her hair in a ponytail. The Golden Girls actress and animal activist Betty White is yet another well-known Betty, as is the former First Lady and wife of President Gerald Ford, Betty Ford, for whom the rehabilitation center is named. On the fictional end of things is Betty Boop, the sexy yet squeaky-voiced cartoon character whose trademark catchphrases is "boop-oop-ee-doop"!
