About Beaver

A beaver is a type of mammal that lives in North America. They are considered of the rodent family. Beavers are partly aquatic animals living in rivers and lakes. Beavers life’s work is about building wood dams, digging canals, and making lodges in the river or lake. They are the second largest rodent in the world. They do live in colonies by creating more than one dam to help keep them protected from predators. They use their bodies to float food and building materials to their homes. Beaver populations used to be in the 60 millions, but when we began to settle in the Americas the beaver was heavily hunted. Now their populations have dwindled to 6 to 12 million. Their fur and glands have continued to be valuable to hunters. Some used their glands for medicine and perfume. Others have killed beavers because of their harvesting of trees and building of dams. Colorado has a high population of beavers in the National Park, but it is difficult to see them as they hide in their homes most days.

Dressing up as Beaver

Beavers make great mascots for school sporting programs. Many of the costumes you find are adult in size because of the use as mascots. Buzzy Beaver is one costume idea you have for baseball mascots. This beaver costume is a brown jumpsuit complete with hands, feet, and the beaver tail. Over the jumpsuit is a baseball jersey, red tennis shoes, and a baseball cap on the head of the mascot. The head is large enough to cover the entire face of the wearer like a hooded face. It looks exactly like a beaver normally does. Other beaver costumes are just the plush jumpsuit in brown. Winnie the Pooh can offer you an idea of a bucked tooth beaver.
