About Barbershop Quartets

A group of four men or four women who perform a capella in four-part harmony, Barbershop Quartets were quite popular in the early part of the turn of the century, their red-and-white costumes similar to that of a barbershop pole. While male barbershop quartets belong to "The Barbershop Harmony Society," female quartets are often known as "The Sweet Adelines."

Dressing up as a Barbershop Quartet

So, you might need to grab three other guys to have yourself a real Barbershop Quartet, but you can still look good as a solo artist until you round up some other singers in stripes! Pick up Barbershop Quartet kit with a striped red and white (or blue and white) vest with a straw skimmer hat and pair it up with your own pair of black or white slacks (depending on the season, of course), and a matching bow tie. Add some black and white spats or wingtips for a fun, '20s retro effect and a fake handlebar mustache. For the finishing touch, wear a garter or two on your upper arms over the sleeves of your shirt in the style that traditional Barbershop Quartet members used to.
