About Ballet

Ballet is a fine art of dance that was developed in the 16th and 17th century in France. The word "ballet" itself is from French origins and means "dance." Ballet was cultivated in France and spread to England, Italy, and Russia where different styles of the same, core steps and graceful movements were given a slightly different interpretation, depending upon the country. Most dancers are female, however there are a few male dancers who display an athletic style and lift some of the ballerinas. Ballets were performed live and were set to classical music to tell a story. No words are used in the live performance of ballets, rather the dancers act out the play through movement, facial acting, and mime. Some of the most famous ballets performed are the Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Giselle, and various ballets based on classical fairy tales like Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty.
