About Ariel

Ariel is a character from the fairy tale and Disney movie the Little Mermaid. The fairy tale dates back to a Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen. He first published the tale in 1837. It was not until the Disney movie in 1989 that the Little Mermaid became extremely popular. It is now a Broadway show, has been a theme for Disney on Ice, and many daughters for the last two decades have been wishing to be Ariel for Halloween. Ariel is not alone in the tale for she falls in love with a mortal prince and is plotted against by a sea witch. The story has several endings including the original ending in the book by Andersen. The Disney adaptation of course ends with a happy ending of love rather than the spirited ending of the fairy tale.

Dressing up as Ariel

Ariel was first introduced as a mermaid and that is perhaps the most popular costume. The mermaid costume allows for a tight bodice and tight skirt ending in flippers. In some cases it is a dress rather than the flippers that offers the person wearing the costume more room to walk comfortably. In the movie Ariel wore sea shells so if you wish to make your own costume you might try finding a bathing suit in that seashell style. There are also costumes that are more dresses for when Ariel was on land during the movie. These are simplistic dresses that add a tiara to the costume and a red wig to complete the picture. Ariel’s accessories include a wand, tiara, shoes, and the red wig if you don’t already have red hair. For other costumes from The Little Mermaid you have Eric the prince, Sebastian the crab, and of course Flounder.
