About American Revolution
The American Revolution started (perhaps earlier) in 1773 when the original 13 colonies that comprised what would become the United States of America banded together to shrug off British rule. Although the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776 by a host of revolutionaries, it wasn't until the war ended in 1783 that the British finally recognized America as a separate nation and agreed to concede. Notable moments throughout the American Revolution include the Boston Tea Party (in which colonists dressed as Indians to protest the British-imposed Tea Tax and hurled crates of the stuff off of the ship it was imported on) and General George Washington crossing the Delaware River into Valley Forge with his troops on Christmas day.
Dressing up as American Revolution
Whether you're part of a historical re-enactment or staging a historical play, there are American Revolution costumes that can take you all the way from the battlefield to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Dress as a Redcoat British soldier or Revolutionary Soldier representing either side. Carry a musket and wear a tricorner hat for a true patriot look. Or, represent some of the famous figures of the American Revolution and dress as George Washington, Ben Frankin, Thomas Jefferson or any other signee of the United States' most important document.
Ladies may want to dress as Betsy Ross, the seamstress who created the American flag or the very first First Lady, Martha Washington.
