About 70s
Popularized by Tom Wolfe as the “Me Decade,” the 1970s saw the 1960s social movements give way to recreational drug use and partying. The decade saw the end of the Vietnam War, followed by the Watergate scandal, President Richard Nixon’s resignation, the gas crisis during a long economic recession and ended with the Iran Hostage Crisis. Escapism from these times was found new disco music played in discotheques where drug use thrived. Socially, the feminism movement boomed and women were beginning to be accepted as a permanent part of the workforce. In the music world, punk rock, heavy metal, and hip-hop were all developed during this time, while the entertainment industry gave birth to cult classics such as Star Wars, The Godfather, and Rocky.
Dressing up as 70s
To get into Studio 54, you need some groovy threads like a gold sequined disco shirt with some far-out bell bottoms. You’ll be the dancing queen in a psychedelic halter pantsuit which must be worn with the hippest platform dancing shoes. All the men and foxy ladies in the 70s had long hair, so accessorize with a wig, maybe a fro or pin-straight hair. Keep on truckin’ in Elton John style disco glasses. If disco isn’t your thing and you don’t mind lying to the public, try on a Nixon mask, just remember to flash some neat-o peace signs.
