Celebrated with stars, stripes. fireworks and cookouts, the 4th of July is a holiday in red, white, and blue. The Fourth of July, or Independence Day, commemorates the day in 1776 when the 13 colonies declared themselves a separate nation from soverign England. On that day, the Continental Congress adopted Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence, the document that would lay the groundwork for a brand new nation. Patriotic displays over two centuries later include the tradition that started in 1776, such as a 13-gun salute (one for each of the original colonies), and displays of red, white, and blue fireworks accompanied by singing patriotic songs, as well as the national anthem, Francis Scott Key's "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Dressing up for the 4th of July

Deck yourself out in red, white, and blue with patriotic-themed costumes for the 4th of July. Dress as symbols of freedom and patriotism with costumes based on Uncle Sam with a stars-and-stripes costume. Ladies can dress as the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom and gift from France to the United States, or as Aunt Samantha, Uncle Sam's female counterpart. You can also costume yourself in the garb of a colonial soldier for historic re-enactments or for a marching program in a local parade... Or just enjoy the day wearing a Patriotic afro wig in striped red, white, and blue, or headgear with a U.S.A. theme!
