About the 4th of July
In 1776, the 4th of July was the day that the United States of America officially declared its independence from Great Britain. The culmination of years of the original 13 colonies warring with England and eventually breaking away to form their own, single democratic nation, the 4th of July was marked with the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Among the signatures on the document include such figures instrumental to the struggle as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and of course, John Hancock.
Today, the 4th of July is celebrated with the wearing of red, white, and blue and family cookouts and BBQs. And of course, there are large-scale fireworks displays usually put on by local groups or on a smaller level, backyard displays with sparklers and other fireworks.
Dressing up for the 4th of July
Break out your stars and stripes for the {4th July} holiday! Perfect for parades or pageants, you can pick up some patriotic costumes in celebration of Independence Day. Gentlemen can be a real Yankee Doodle Dandy with an Uncle Sam costume, with red-and-white striped pants, a matching top hat and a shiny blue jacket accented with silver stars.
