Phil Spector’s Wig-trospective – Wig-based costume ideas!

Phil Spector may be headed to jail, but will he be allowed to take his awesome collection of wigs with him?

The 69-year-old music mogul best known for his “Wall of Sound” production technique he used working with the likes of the Righteous Brothers (with whom he penned “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin'”), Ike and Tina Turner, and various girl groups like The Ronettes, has been convicted of second degree murder. Spector was given 19 years to life in prison after an initial mistrial regarding the 2003 death of actress Lana Clarkson who was found dead at a party in Spector’s home, the victim of a gunshot wound to the head.

While Phil Spector’s fate has been determined, what will happen to his fabulous collection of wigs that appeared upon his head during the course of his trial? Chances are, you may not be able to get your hands on one of these (unless they may be auctioned off for charity… Who knows? Stranger things have happened!), but you can get your mitts on some synthetic substitutes if the urge strikes you to concoct your very own Phil Spector costume in time for Halloween or any celebrity-themed costume party.

We’ve gathered together some of Phil’s best coiffured creations and links to appropriate wigs that can help you pull off a Spector-tacular look of your own.

To start with, you can wear flashy suits with wide ties, no tie, or a prison uniform as a basis for your costume. Put on a pair of tinted Lennon glasses that Spector was often seen wearing at his trial.

As for what wig you may want to choose, the possibilities are endless. Here is a collection of some of the more memorable ones that you can replicate yourself.

First up, we have the classic, modified mullet. It’s business in the front…

…party in the back

To get this look, pick out a Mullet Wig in a brown color. You may not want a “true” mullet look, but more of a modified version, an updated mullet, if you will.

For a fairly conservative look, try Phil Spector’s blonde mod look on for size:

To get this look, pick up a Mod Wig in your choice of color. While blonde is pictured here, Phil has rocked more than one color of this style before. The platinum, however, was the most striking.

For something fun, carefree, and frisky, there’s this two-toned frizzy affair:

Start off with a brown or dark-haired Jheri Curl wig and spray the front lightly with Blonde hairspray-in color to the front part of the curls to get this subtle, unique effect.

We’ve saved the best for last, though! Phil’s most spectacular wig of them all during the course of his trial channeled Albert Einstein with groovy, ’60s glasses.

That’s A LOT of wig right there!! You can achieve a similar look with a Blonde Afro Wig. You may want to use a hairpick to loosen the curls a bit to get the frizzy look seen here.

Phil may not have much choice with his upcoming stint in prison, however, your costume choices if you decide to make a DIY Phil Spector costume are pretty limitless.
