A New Year's Eve tradition takes place in Akita (North of Japan) where local villages get visited by demons called Namahage.

Young children; lazy ones are often the blight of many parents’ existence. For the parents in Japan’s Oga Peninsula, Akita Prefecture in northern Honshu, Japan, there is a solution: the infamous Namahage; where an annual ritual takes place on the 31st of December. Dozens of young single men (traditionally) from various regions in Akita Prefecture, Japan dress like the Namahage demon. Each portrayer adorns an eerie demon mask (various colors depending on region), a straw raincoat and waistband and carries a scary tool made of wood depicting a knife/stick/ various weapon; and a pail. They re-enact the folklore dressed as these demons and march around the village in hopes of scaring prepubescent kids into total parental submission. Going door-to-door, they sweep the village threatening to drag any spoiled disobedient children. As the story goes, a child's lazy spirit (even lazy adults) that is disobedient is dragged into the snow covered mountains away from their parents. Knowing the story very well, upon barging into each home, the young children is immediately frightened by loud roars as they are chased, kids typically scream with agony and fear. This prompts parents to sooth their kids worries of being taken away by the Namahage, letting them know that they’ve been behaving.

We should do this in the US :)

They are called Namahage (生剥), which fittingly comes from the name for the burn you get if you are lazy and spend too much time under the heated tables, the kotatsu, in winter.

I have been paying more attention lately about silicon masks. I am not talking about silicon masks you can find at your local iParty, but special effects/movies silicon masks.

'They Live' was a 1988 movie directed by John Carpenter about "A drifter discovers a pair of sunglasses that allow him to wake up to the fact that aliens have taken over the Earth."

I found this nice tutorial to make alien masks similar to the ones featured in the "They Live" movie on MakeProjects.com that you can either view here or download.

Another awesome yet creepy mask, not sure if it's more looking like a horse or a donkey (it's up for debate) but this is very well done.

The guys at NorthFur.ca sell a variety of animal masks (http://www.northfur.ca/gallery//masks): cow, walrus, raccoon, and so on... but the horse/donkey mask is my favorite one.

This is the Large Horse/Donkey Muzzle, a newer and larger version of our older horse muzzle. It has a large and long snout made to resemble a horse. It can be painted as many horse breeds as well as donkeys and zebras. It is made in hot foam latex and applied with Pros-Aid adhesive and painted with Kryolan Aquacolor makeup.

I have dreamed about becoming a creature like this since I saw "The Dark crystal"( landstriders scene) when I was a child. Way into my adult life now I went to see circ de soleil, while watching the blank face crutch walkers, it hit me, why don't I combine them both. When I did a search on line it turns out there are others with the same idea (Thank you Garen and Mellissa for the info aka. Stilt Spirits). This creature I refer to as "what nightmares are made of" is 7 feet tall and primarily made of recycled foam. An Old Foam Eggcrate Mattress, duct tape (that has been spray painted black) coffee dyed cheese cloth and dollar store spooky cloth. I used old wooden crutches, I modified to make taller since they only go to 6.6ft. The most expensive thing was the dry wall stilts that I bought, which I found out is cheaper than making stilts from wood. My dream/nightmare has come true!

As reported earlier on this season, Osama Bin Laden is a popular Halloween search as a costume idea.

We found this Osama Bin LA'DEAD mask available on eBay, which is pretty graphic (we've seen zombies a lot scarier than that) and pretty controversial, we are actually surprised that Ricky's doesn't carry this mask after promoting a few controversial costumes this Halloween.

...zombie seems more attractive than vampire or any others in current time, but they all appeared at this year's New York Comic Con 2011... I have to say that 'The Black' is really a welcomed theme to American cosplayers, and to my surprise, most of them did such great work.

This Zombie guy was clearly on his way to Prom when he was loaded full of bullets!

Sixteen actors dressed as zombies were injured Tuesday when they fell from a platform during filming of a new movie in the "Resident Evil" series, officials said, and rescue workers at first were startled at the seemingly catastrophic scene.

Can you imagine the rescue crew getting on the seen, looking at at all these individuals obviously hurt (they were disguised as zombie) and not know it's a movie set!

The victims' gory zombie costumes made it difficult for crews to assess the severity of the actors' injuries, said Peter Macintyre, Toronto emergency medical services spokesman.

The good news is that nobody was seriously injured, and the medics were able to figure it out!

Last year my friend Cyriak and I made an animation together called ‘Meow’ which was all about a zombie kitten apocalypse... Fast forward to today and a message plopped into Cyriak’s Youtube inbox along with the following photo - Bell and her little cousin ... dressed as one of the zombie cats from our video!

We wish we could have been there!

The Newcastle Undead Society held the third annual Newcastle Zombie March in the early evening of Sunday 9 October 2011 with nearly 200 truly alarming, terrifying and disgusting zombies joining in the festivities.

But we checked out their Facebook page and found a link to their Flickr gallery featuring a lot of zombie costumes.

Very cool!

Kate Perry posted these photos on her Twitter page, apparently after spending the night at the California theme park Knott's Berry farm with some friends.
